TraceCloner has many features.
However, the basic steps to clone a trace are as follows:

Load the background image: this is the image that has the elements that will be transformed into traces.

Calibrate the plot: this makes the traces to be in the same measurement units and scale as the background image. After calibration, the mouse position in the green strip will change from red to black, and will be expressed in the background image units.

Select the kind of trace that better matches the item of interest in the background image: it can be a line, a polyline, a smooth curved line, or other primitive shapes.

Perform the tracing: use the mouse to set the points that best reproduce the background element. Finish most of the primitives with double click.

Save the trace in any of the many supported formats.
